EASTERN CAPE FILM AND VIDEO SEMINAR

The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Directorate of Arts and Culture will host Film and Video Seminar from 
Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 January 2001 at Fish River Sun in Port Alfred.  The Seminar is aimed at formulating a coherent strategy on Film 
and Video which is inclined towards the implementation of the National Policy compounded with dissemination of information to communities.  
Almost every country in the World recognizes the need to develop indigenous Film industry which reflects the Nations own Culture in its 
Cinema, television and broadcasting.

The past had been clouded by various forms of suppression, censorship and lack of unity in the film and broadcasting industry which was due 
to effects of apartheid system.  This is also in line with the RDP aims and objectives, namely, meeting the needs of the people, job 
creation, developing human resources, improving the economy and democratizing the State and society, the Film industry presents a unique 
means to promote our province and develop local talents.  The exhibitions will combine  Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts  and Culture 
and Department of Economic Affairs-Tourism to portray visual picture of the Eastern Cape.  There will also be an exhibition portraying the 
history of development of the Film industry in South Africa, ranging from 19th Century to date.  The Seminar will draw stakeholders from 
the whole country.  All stakeholders in our province must contact our districts offices for more information.

The Chairperson of the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Board, Prof Themba Sirayi will lead discussions on programmes and progress of the Audio 
Visual Centre based in Fort Hare University.  Mr Shaun Moodley National Chairperson of Film and Video Foundation will present paper on 
International perspective.  Other presenters to the Workshop include a famous story-teller Ms Gcina Hlope, Mr Mandla Langa, Dr Wally Serote-
Department of Arts, Culture, Sience and Technology standing committee chairperson, deputy minister of Trade and Industry Mrs Lindiwe 
Hendricks and deputy minister of finance Honourable Mr Mandisi Mpahlwa will lead discussions on Economic value of the industry.  The 
Eastern Cape Premier Rev Makhenkesi Stofile and MEC Nosimo Balindlela will officiate the occasion.
